Hi there, i love candles, the scented ones for decoration, and i also love them when they're lit. my mum said today it was impossible for a totally blind person to light candles and i wondered if she was right in her theory or whether people have lit them alone before. if so, any tips would be much appreciated. i'd like to be independent with this type of thing.
Hi Narcissa,
Yes it is sertenly possible for a totaly blind person to light candles, I do it all the time. Just a quick question, do you have any sight like light perseption at all? Because that can be helpfull but not nessasary. So in kace you don't I'll give the derections for just feeling things.
To light a candle I would recamend a longnozed lighter, like you would use to light a charcoll grill because you have more control over ware your hands and clotheing are. You put your lighter at the vary bace of the wick and push on the lever to get a flame, you will feel wormth if it is working, be careful though that your fingers are not in the derect path of the end or you will be havveing litt up fingers! Keep pressing on the lighters butten for a few seconds then take it away from the wick. If you put your hand about 5 to 6 inches abuve the place ware the wick is and there is no heet rizeing up then you need to do it again.
Tip, if you have a wick that is about 2 to 3 inchs long and it has been lit before I would recamend that you take a pair of sissers and trim the vary top most porsion off. Ash colects there and with it trimmed away your wick will light esyer.
An olternitive to lighting sented candles if these instructions sound too frightning is to by a candle wormer. It is for Jar candles and comes in several sizes and there not to expencive.
I hope this made sence and your mum lucens up. You will lirn to be independent with this after afew trys, just don't let your mum freek out and stop you..
If you have any questions don't hessatate to ask. Candle lighting is an enjoyment for me.
Good luck!
Tracey
If using a match, find the wick first before the candle's lit.
keep in mind where the wick is, light the match, bring it to where you think the wick should be, move it back and forth until you touch the wick, then hold it there for a second or two.
like the above post said, if you hold your hand above the cnandle and there's no heat, you need to try again.
It sounds harder than it really is.
also, keep a glass or bowl of water handy to drop the match in when your done.
aww, thanks. yeah i do have light perception. is the base of the wick the pointy bit at the top? the bit that sticks up? i'll have to try and find one of those long lighters.
Yeh, smile, it's the bit at the top.... Try and make sure that it's not laying to one side or it's harder to catch. I'd recommend a button lighter as opposed to the ones with the wheel on top. Not really sure why, but have just always found it easier.
Just adding my name to the list of candle collecters. I love them and burn them and have never had a problem lighting them with matches. Sugar's point about checking the direction of the wick is a good one, sometimes they get stuck on an angle, or flat against the top of the candle. Also, when you buy a candle, often the wick has a thin coating of wax on it. This just means you'll have to hold the flame to it a bit longer the first time you light it, so the wax coating melts away and the wick can catch.
Good luck,
Erin
thanks errin and the rest. i like the button lighters too, the wheel ones scare me.
Button lighters are deffinitly helpful, and I also liketo light and burn them. It takes some time sometimes to get them lit, but it does work. Hope that everything that was said here was helpful for you, and I know by reading everyone's suggestions it was helpful for me as well.
I personally like wooden matches, but whatever works.
ok cool, going to try it tonight once i've taken the price tag off of it etc. thanks.
